A Brief History of Glocal Mission

Glocal Mission exists to SEEK the lost, DISCIPLE the found, and MULTIPLY disciple-makers and churches with caring love of Christ locally and globally.

Here is a brief history of how we began!

Rev. Dr. David Kim's Background

Rev. Dr. David Kim, born and raised in South Korea, arrived in the United States in 2002 after having served as a missionary and church planter in Quito, Ecuador for 12 years.

His first eight years here were a time of furthering his studies and learning about the American culture and church. He visited and spoke with over one-hundred churches and repeatedly heard one thing that deeply concerned him. As he asked parishioners and pastors about mission field and missionaries, he was shocked to hear the answer was almost always the same: “our mission field and our missionaries are overseas”.

While he knew that to be true and that the world desperately needs missionaries, it concerned him deeply that very few viewed themselves as witnesses of Jesus in their own backyard due to the lack of an accurate biblical view and deep theological conviction of where our mission field is and who the missionaries are.

Glocal Mission is Birthed

In response to this informal survey of American churches and exegetical studies of the Great Commission passages, the idea of Glocal Mission was birthed in Dr. Kim’s heart in 2010. To him, regardless of where we live, anyone without Christ is a mission field while everyone with Christ is a missionary by vocation. In other words, everyone is either a mission field or a witness of Jesus by virtue of his or her baptismal vocation.

In light of Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:8, he began teaching and training God’s people to understand that the mission field is not only overseas or just in our local community, but it is both over there (global) and right here (local). This is where the name, Glocal Mission is derived. God had called us to reach and make disciples of “all nations” and to be “His witnesses” both in our own backyard and to the ends of the earth.

In October of 2016, Glocal Mission was officially formed with a vision to equip and mobilize every Christian to become everyday disciple-making missionaries globally and locally. We seek to do that by guest speaking at churches, conferences, seminars, and retreats, through individual mentoring and coaching, and by raising up new disciple-making leaders and planting new gospel-centered and Great Commission-driven churches in Houston, in Texas, in the Americas, and around the world.

Humbled by What God Has Done

As of January 2019, by God’s grace, Glocal Mission has a Mission Center in Houston, oversees 22 congregations, has training schools and Bible Institutes in the US and Latin America, and hosts annual Discipleship Conferences, Church Planting Bootcamps, and retreats for Pastoral Couples. God has worked mightily through all the wonderful people that serve in our Glocal Mission churches. In our first two years, we have seen 384 conversions, 216 baptisms, 154 students in our Bible Institutes, 9 students in Concordia Seminaries and Universities, and 7 new churches planted.

We are amazed and humbled by what God has done in two short years and we are confident that He will continue to use us to seek the lost, disciple the found, and multiply disciple-makers and churches globally and locally with His caring love. To God be all the glory!
